UChicago Model Class, “The Bearable Lightness of Kitsch”, with Professor Malynne Sternstein

Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 3:00 PM until 4:00 PMCentral Standard Time UTC -06:00

In this model session, we will discuss Milan Kundera's notion of kitsch as the "beautiful lie" that aids in our daily and epochal existence. Kundera positions kitsch at the crux of his novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being and reinforces the importance of kitsch as a fundamental aporia of modern being: "No matter how much we scorn it, kitsch is an integral part of the human condition." In our model class session, we will discuss what kistch is (and is not) and how it leeches onto art and is a function, perhaps, of life in the 'trap' that the world has become.
